Benedicte Bodard from Barcelona, who saves old tiles and converts them into new tables. The fotos are from her homepage

How and when did you get in contact with mosaicos hidráulicos?
In the house of my grandparents in France there were "carreaux de ciment" or cement tiles that I always liked. The shades of grey and blue formed floral or geometrical patterns which fascinated me, but it was only when I came to Barcelona (10 years ago) and lived in the Eixample, the modernist part of the city, that I realized how many mosaic tiles endend up in the rubble bags in the streets. I could not understand how something so beautiful could be thrown away and be lost forever.
How and when did you start your bussiness?
After I wondered about the theme of the beautiful tiles that were thrown away nearly daily, I thought:" I can't wait for somebody to do something, I will start to make tables from those tiles!" So I started to design tables, consoles. In relation to the pattern of the tiles that I found, I created a special design. After 18 months I had created trivets, coasters and wallhangings to use a single tile and fit for the low budget but also some quite big and important projects.
What is your professional background?
I worked for many years as a stylist in Los Angeles. I have always liked to create, to touch fabric, to view a mixture of colours, of patterns and find out what is appropriate for somebody in reference to his personality. Here it is a bit similar, the people come to visit me and sometimes I have to explain to them why a thing that they like so much does not apply to them. I have also always attended art classes and I like architecture, which is a great thing if you live in Barcelona.
What was your biggest project? / the one you like best, are most proud of?
I am always in love with my most recent project, be it the nightstand with drawer and shelf that we have created a few months ago or those little coasters with flowers in sizes that you will never find again or this big and beautiful table that we made for this couple who has no idea what a treasure they have at home... I don't know, I am very happy with all the projects, each one is different, just as are my clients, unique...
What do you wish for the future?
In the future I would like to have more customers, to know that I will be able to live from the income that stems from years of hard and intensive work. I would like to be sure to have so much work that I'll be able to employ other people. I would like to create a project with the city of Barcelona or the county of Catalonia to save everything which is torn out during a renovation process and which can be used with a bit of creativity and imagination, establish like a big warehouse and sell to the public all those things which are not manufactured any more. I would also like to see the tiles in a museum and so I participate in the establishment of one. I can not imagine that those thousands of tiles that I have in my workshop will have to stay there.

Wann und wie bist du mit Zementfliesen in Kontakt gekommen?
Im Haus meiner Großeltern in Frankreich gab es "carreaux de ciment" oder Zementfliesen, die mir schon immer gefallen haben. Die grauen und blauen Farbschattierungen ergaben faszinierende florale oder grafische Muster, aber erst als ich nach Barcelona kam (vor 10 Jahren) und im Eixample, dem Jugendstil-Stadtteil wohnte, stellte ich fest, daß viele der Fliesen in den Schuttsäcken in den Straßen endeten. Ich konnte nicht verstehen, wie so etwas Schönes weggeschmissen werde kann und damit für immer verlorengeht.
Wann und wie hast du dein Geschäft gegründet?
Nachdem ich einige Zeit über das Thema der schönen Fliesen nachgedacht hatte, die fast täglich weggeworfen wurden, dachte ich: " Ich kann nicht darauf warten, dap jemand anderes etwas tut, ich werde selbst aus diesen Fliesen Tische machen!" So fing ich an Beistelltische und Konsolen zu entwerfen. Bezugnehmend auf das spezielle Muster, das ich gefunden hatte, entwarf ich ein bestimmtes Design. Nach 18 Monaten hatte ich so Untersetzer für Töpfe oder Flaschen und Wandbilder gemacht, um jeweils eine einzelne Fliese zu verwenden und geeignet für den kleineren Geldbeutel aber auch ziemlich große und wichtige Projekte. Was ist dein beruflicher Hintergrund?
Ich habe viele Jahre in Los Angeles als Stylistin gearbeitet. Es hat mir immer gefallen, etwas zu entwerfen, Stoff anzufassen, Farb- und Musterpaletten anzuschauen und das zu finden, was zu jemandem passt im Bezug auf seinen Persönlichkeit. Hier ist es vergleichbar, die Leute kommen mich besuchen und manchmal muss ich ihnen erklären, wieso eine sache, die ihnen so gefällt nicht zu ihnen passt. Ich habe auch immer Kunstkurse besucht und ich mag Architektur, eine gute Sache, wenn man in Barcelona wohnt.
Was war dein größtes / dein Lieblingsprojekt?
Ich bin immer verliebt in meine letztes Projekt, sei es das Nachttischchen mit Schublade und Ablage, das wir vor einigen Monaten entworfen haben oder die kleinen Flaschenuntersetzer mit Blumen in Größen, wie man sie nie wieder finden wird oder dieser besonders große und schöne Tisch für das Paar, das keinen Ahnung hat, was für einen Schatz sie zu Hause haben... Ich weiß nicht, ich bin sehr zufrieden mit allen Projekten, jedes ist so verschieden wie meine Kunden, einzigartig...
Was wünschst du dir für die Zukunft?
In der Zukunft hätte ich gern einen größeren Kundenkreis, so dass ich sicher sein kann, das ich von dem Einkommen leben kann, das auf den Jahren harter und intensiver Arbeit aufbaut. Es wäre schön zu wissen, dass ich soviel Arbeit habe, dass ich andere Leute einstellen kann. Ich würde gern ein Projekt mit der Stadt Barcelona oder dem Land Katalonien entwickeln alle diese Baustoffe zurückzugewinnen, die heute weggeschmissen werden und die man mit etwas Geschmack und Kreativität weiterverwenden kann, eine Art großes Lager zu etablieren und alle diese Dinge zu verkaufen, die heute nicht mehr hergestellt werden. Ich würde auch gerne die Fliesen in einem Museum sehen und arbeite daran mit es zu errichten. Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, dass die tausenden von Fliesen, die in meiner Werkstatt lagern, dort bleiben müssen.

¿Como y cuando conocías a las baldosas hidráulicas?
En casa de mis abuelos, ha habido "carreaux de ciment" o baldosas hidraulicas que siempre me habia gustado. Los tonos de gris y azules formaban dibujos vegetales o geometricos y me fascinaban pero es solamente al llegar a Barcelona (hace 10 años) que viviendo en el Eixample, la parte Modernista de la ciudad, me he fijado que ha habido muchas baldosas hidraulicas en los sacos de obra de las calles. No lo podia entender, como algo tan bonito podia estar tirado, perdido para siempre sin más ?
¿Como y cuando empezabas con la empresa?
Despues de dar vueltas al tema de las baldosas tan bonitas que se tiraban casi cada dia, pense : "No puedo esperar que alguien haga algo, voy hacer mesas con estas baldosas !" Asi he empezado diseñando mesas, consoles. En funccion de los dibujos y de lo que habia encontrado, imaginaba un diseño distinto. Despues de 18 meses, he hecho salvamanteles, posabotellas, cuadros para utilizar una baldosa sola y para los presupuestos mas bajo pero tambien, projectos bastante importante y grande.
¿ Cual es tu formación profesional?
He trabajado como estilista por muchos años en Los Angeles. Siempre he gustado crear, tocar telas, mirar mezclas de colores, dibujos y encontrar lo que conviene a cada uno en funccion de su personalidad. Aqui es un poquito igual, la gente me viene visitar y a veces, tengo que explicar porque una cosa que le gusta tanto no le conviene. Tambien siempre he tomado cursos de Arte, me gusta la Arquitectura y es buena cosa cuando vives en Barcelona.
¿ Que fue tu mejor/ más grande projecto?
Siempre me enamoro de mi ultimo projecto, que sea la mesita de noche con cajon y estante que hemos creado hace unos meses o los pequeños posabotellas con flores de tamaño que nunca se encontrara mas o esta mesa tan grande y tan bonita que hemos hecho para esta pareja quien no tiene idea que tiene un tesoro en su casa... No se, soy muy contenta con todos projectos, cada uno es distinto como mis clientes, unicos...
¿Que quieres por el futuro? En el futuro, me gustaria tener una clientela mas amplia para saber que puedo vivir con el sueldo que proviene de años de trabajo intenso y duro. Me gustaria saber que tengo tanto trabajo que puedo dar trabajo a otras personas. Me hubiera gustado crear un projecto con la ciudad o la generalitad de Catalunya de recuperacion de todo lo que se tira en construccion cada dia y que se podria aprovechar con un poquito de imaginacion y gusto, crear como un grande almacen y vender al publico todas estas cosas que no se fabrican mas. Tambien me hubiera gustado ver las baldosas en un museo y por eso participar en el desarollo de este. No puedo imaginar que los miles de baldosas que tengo en el taller se queden ahi.
